"meh"

Scribbling down ideas for a project I'm working on.

The scribbles are happening on yellow newsprint, which is my medium for creativity. Computers force me to use straight lines. Computers give strong, silent suggestions to me about consistent formatting and bulleted lists. They force me to come up with a final version when I'm still playing with vague thoughts. So I scribble on yellow newsprint, specifically with a blue PaperMate pen (medium point). It's what I do.

So I was just now scribbling down ideas, with arrows and side notes and question marks and alternative suggestions. One in particular I couldn't find the words for. So I scribbled down more and more phrases that might help to define what was in my head. None of them hit the mark. All of them together will remind me later of where I was going, but I'm definitely not there yet. I didn't want to get hung up in that spot, but neither did I want to leave it there as if I approved of this product.

So I put a circle around the whole thing, and scribbled "meh" in the margin. As in, "meh" - it's not what I mean yet, come back and work with this later. Say it out loud, and you'll hear the feeling in it - "meh". I picked it up a while ago from my sister-and-brother-in-law and it works. It's like a placeholder to come back to when I'm ready to turn mediocre into good.

Meanwhile, my scribbling continues.
