at Maidan

We spent the day at the Maidan site in Kyiv today, with two of our favourite Ukrainians who travelled most of the night from Poltava and Krivoy Rog to get here, and just left to travel home tonight.

We were at Maidan!

Can you imagine?!

Walked in the place where I watched thousands and thousands gather, sing, and resist - online, just a few months ago. I wept then.

I wept again today when a much smaller group broke into the national anthem. Last time I heard it, the sound of fighting and shooting was in the background. Today, the sun shone and peace reigned.

We had lattes and borsch.

At Maidan!

Priests prayed there.

Barricades are still in place, but within - it is tidy and clean. Even what is rubble is stacked neatly in place.

Or preserved as an artistic statement.

The highlight?

This moment. At a Maidan piano. Tents and barricades in the background.

That is a moment I will never, ever, ever forget. Not ever.

The day ended on a trampoline with a 5-year-old who whispered a wish that we would never go home.

I thought that wish was just about perfect.
